Alberta Find a Doctor aims to make it easier and quicker for Albertans to find a doctor, nurse practitioner or clinic.

The website, launched in 2019, is a partnership between Primary Care Networks, the Government of Alberta and Primary Care Alberta and is available to all Albertans and primary care providers, free of charge.

If you’re a primary care provider or a clinic staff member, here’s how to be added to the website, which attracts more than 1 million visits each year.

Q: Which providers or clinics are listed on Alberta Find a Doctor?

A: Alberta Find a Doctor aims to maintain a comprehensive list of primary care clinics, family doctors and nurse practitioners operating in Alberta and offering insured (free) primary care services, which includes all the services you receive for your everyday health needs. Clinicians listed on the website must be certified and in good standing with their regulatory body, which in the case of family doctors is the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Q: How can providers or clinics be added to the website?

A: If a clinic physician or nurse practitioner is a member of or affiliated with a Primary Care Network, please contact that PCN to find out how to be added to the website, and how to ensure listings are kept as up-to-date and accurate as possible. If the clinic or provider are not affiliated with a PCN, please contact [email protected].

Q: What does accepting patients mean?

A: When clinics or providers are listed as “accepting patients” on Alberta Find a Doctor, it means they are open to providing care that would reasonably be expected to extend beyond a single visit or episodic care. If a clinic is offering walk-in services, it should be listed or identified as such but it will not be marked as accepting new patients. Family physicians in Alberta (and currently nurse practitioners) should refer to the CPSA’s rules on establishing a physician-patient relationship. Providers are expected to provide care without discrimination. Patients cannot be declined due to the medications they take, or because they have complex medical conditions. Patients cannot be refused for choosing not to pay block fees or purchase uninsured professional services.

Q: What do I do if I have specific criteria for taking new patients or practice limitations?

A: We recommend that clinics taking certain populations or conditions only, such as pediatricians or maternity clinics, make that clear in their clinic listing – either by adding it to the name of the clinic or including it in the clinic details section, which can be edited to list clinic-wide criteria, or criteria specific to individual providers. Reach out to your PCN or contact us at [email protected] for more information about how to add or edit this information. Please provide patients/users with as much information as possible to avoid disappointment.

Q. Can I advertise additional services on Alberta Find a Doctor?

A: Clinic information can be added to your listing that includes the clinic address, opening hours, contact information and/or website URL, as well as walk-in services, accessibility and whether the clinic is open after hours. Providers can specify their gender and which languages they speak in addition to English. Private practitioners or clinic services that fall outside covered (free) primary care services cannot be listed on Alberta Find a Doctor.

Q: How often should provider or clinic information be updated?

Provider or clinic information should be kept as up-to-date as possible. We ask PCNs to update your information at least once per month. When accepting status changes, providers should inform their PCN or the Alberta Find a Doctor website as quickly as possible.

Q: How do I report an incorrect listing or information?

A: PCN-affiliated clinics or providers should contact their PCN. To report an incorrect listing, you can also find your clinic in the directory and click on ‘report issue with clinic information.’ Alternatively, email [email protected].

Q: I’m having trouble logging into my Alberta Find a Doctor account or can’t reach my PCN. What do I do?

A: For technical support or assistance, please reach out to the Alberta Find a Doctor team at [email protected].
